About

Maybe you’ve seen him at Whole Foods: Sensible shoes, tiny designer eye wear, NPR tote, reusable bag positioned under the Fair Trade coffee dispenser. He’s the Uptight Seattleite, here to gently nudge you toward the benefits of Gore Tex, farmer’s markets, and disposing of your dog’s corpse in a spiritual and environmentally sensitive manner.

An advice columnist for the Seattle Weekly since 2006, this well-meaning and utterly hapless character has now made his wisdom available to the rest of the country in “A SENSITIVE LIBERAL’S GUIDE TO LIFE: How to Banter with Your Barista, Hug Mindfully, and Relate to Friends Who Choose Kids Over Dogs” (Gotham Books; original illustrations by Rod Filbrandt).

The Uptight One points the way to urban enlightenment with friendly reminders on the Hierarchy of Transportation Righteousness (condensed version: cars < buses < walking < bikes < recumbent bikes), ethical behavior at the grocery store (is it really OK to accept their offer to “help you out to your car”?), and what to read on the bus (Vonnegut versus The Kite Runner versus The Economist). For both insecure liberals and those who love to mock them, the Uptight Seattleite offers insights from atop his pony-tailed pinnacle of wisdom.
